Baggies struggle in milestone match

19/08/2008 9:30:00 AM
Swifts were unable to pull off a surprise victory for coach Jamie Britten's 300th senior game, going down to Horsham District Football League premiership contenders Laharum at Laharum.

The Baggies were completely outclassed after quarter time, as the Mountain Men piled on goal after goal to run out 115 point victors.

Britten booted two goals in his milestone match with Mark StClair named Swifts best after a stand-in ruck job in the absence of the suspended Sam Cooper.

Lee Marshall was also impressive, as was Owen Phillips, Brett Hargreaves and young Cody Virgona.

Team manager Robert Carey said it was a difficult day for his team, but was pleased with the way they never gave up.

``We were undermanned as it was, we had four under 17 players come up and they did pretty well,'' Carey said.

``To come up against these teams we have got to have everything right otherwise they overpower you.

``It was a hard day at the office but the boys played out the game and didn't chuck it in at any stage.''

Carey said with the likes of Jake Goodes, Scott Carey, Sam Cooper all missing and Ricky Whitehead playing but suffering from illness, it was always going to be hard work.

``One or two blokes got sent off for 15 minutes which was a bit disappointing,'' Carey said.

Great Western coughed up an expected four points at home to Pimpinio on Saturday.

The Lions, who are above Pimpinio on the ladder, lost the match by 26 points after the Tigers ran away with a big half time lead.

The 32 point margin was one the home team could never peg back despite the best efforts of ruckman Luke Cadzow, ball winners Bobby Garley and Dale Hurley (three goals) and the inform Sam Pitman.

Nauruans Agir Amwano and Tiana Waidabu were also impressive.

It was perhaps the Lions accuracy on goal that let them down in the end, booting 8.16 to Pimpinio's 14.6 which was 24 scoring shots to 20.

Coach Sonny Walton remained out of the team with his injured thumb but is expected to pull on the boots for the final round of the season this Saturday against Natimuk.

This clash is likely to determine who finishes the season in sixth place on the ladder, with both teams locked together on 36 points. Pimpinio's victory has also elevated them to 36 points but they need to win their tough clash with Noradjuha-Quantong this Saturday to have any chance of finishing as `best of the rest'.

Natimuk scored a 19 point win over Edenhope-Apsley for their seventh win of the season, Kalkee thumped Taylors Lake by 128 points and Noradjuha-Quantong took an edge over Rupanyup heading into the teams' elimination final with a 25 point victory.
