Swifts end with shocker

Swifts ended their 2008 Horsham District Football League season with a `shocker'

There is no other way to describe the performance against flag aspirant Kalkee, in Saturday's final home and away match.

Swifts would not have gone to Kalkee on Saturday expecting to notch up a win, but they would have expected to perform far better than they did.

The Kees made their intentions known from the outset with an eight goal opening term. Swifts only score for the quarter was a goal to the busy Ricky Whitehead.

In fact this was the Baggies only goal for the match. They struggled to kick three minor scores in the second term and then failed to bother the scoreboard at all in the second half.

While this struggle was unfolding for the Baggies, Kalkee was having a field day. The 17 goals in the first half was a top effort, but they came out and backed this up with another 13 goals in the third quarter and finished the day off with a 10 goal final term, for a massive 249 points win.

Kalkee's forward duo of Anthony Perkins and Brian Harrison had a field day. Perkins finished the day with 12 goals and Harrison 10 goals.

It was difficult to find good Swifts players on the day, the best of them being Neil Scotty, Brett Hargreaves, Ricky Whitehead and Scott Carey.

Great Western's season also came to a close on Saturday and it too was a disappointing finish with the Lions losing out by 29 points to Natimuk.

The Lions struggled from the outset with Natimuk showing the way on the scoreboard.

At the last change Great Western would have rated themselves a winning chance trailing by a little better than three goals, but the Rams kept the pressure on and outscored the Lions in the final term.

The Lions shared the goals around on the day with Andrew Cameron, Dale Hurley and Luke Schuyler all booting three goals, while Luke Cadzow, Brendan Waisabu and Dale Hurley were good players in this loss.
