Western on a mission

22/08/2008 9:36:00 AM
Great Western's mission tomorrow is quite basic - finish as best of the rest in the Horsham District Football League.

To do this it will need to beat Natimuk tomorrow to end the season in sixth position.

Three teams currently sit on 36 points just outside the top five, including the Rams and Pimpinio, with the Tigers having a difficult clash with Noradjuha-Quantong tomorrow.

Great Western has the superior percentage of the three, but a victory is likely to be enough to seal sixth spot.

Helping the Lions' cause is the return of coach Sonny Walton from a thumb injury, which has kept him out of the team since playing against Harrow-Balmoral in round 13.

Walton's inclusion bolsters the onball brigade, which is sure to be strong with players such as Dale Hurley, Agir Amwano and Luke Cadzow in good form.

``Finishing sixth is obviously better than finishing last,'' president Rodney Matheson said.

``We probably have won more games than we thought we would have but it would have been nice to win a couple more.

``We are just over the moon that Dale Hurley could come back and play the last few games and we are rapt that we have had the Nauruans.

``They have turned out to be handy senior players.''

Tomorrow's clash will be played at Natimuk, which will help the home side try and reverse the Lions' 37 points win earlier in the season. On this occasion, Richard Thomas, Walton and Amwano stood out as Great Western's best, as the Lions won the match courtesy of an eight goal to two second half.

Swifts will look to surprise everyone and cap off their season of rebuilding with victory over powerhouse Kalkee.

The Baggies have been struggling for most of the season but have managed to fight to four wins under the guidance of coach Jamie Britten, who last weekend played his 300th senior game of football.

Their woes have been compounded with the loss of key onballer Jake Goodes to a knee injury for the final few matches of the season but has drawn great pleasure out of the efforts of youngsters such as Ricky Whitehead, who must be in with a chance at the league best fairest count, Scott Carey, Richard Dodds and Brett Hargreaves.

However, tomorrow's focus will firstly be to win - but otherwise to round off the season with a creditable performance.

The Baggies are likely to be outclassed in this clash but will be desperate to put together a better performance than the one that saw them go down by 135 points earlier in the season.

Harrow-Balmoral will wrap up the minor premiership with victory over Edenhope-Apsley at Edenhope tomorrow, Rupanyup should take care of Taylors Lake and Noradjuha-Quantong hosts Pimpinio in a danger game for the Bombers.
